Church Leadership Award
The Church Leadership Award was created to encourage and support outstanding Mennonite students with gifts for ministry as they prepare to serve the church.
- Recipient: Awarded annually to a full-time or part-time student beginning their first year of study in a master’s program on campus
- Amount: Up to 100 percent of tuition for full-time students; up to 75 percent of tuition for part-time students
- Application deadline: Priority will be given to applications received by March 15

- Scholarship type: Merit-based
- Duration: Full-time students: up to four years for a Master of Divinity and up to three years for a Master of Arts (provided they meet certain conditions each year);
Part-time students: up to six years for a Master of Divinity and up to five years for a Master of Arts (provided they meet certain conditions each year) - Recipient’s program: Master of Divinity Campus; MA in Christian Formation Campus; MA: Theology and Global Anabaptism; or MA: Theology and Peace Studies
- Recipient’s location of study: On campus
- Recipient’s enrollment status: Full time or part time
- Recipient’s permanent residence: U.S. or Canada
- Recipient’s church affiliation: Applicant must be an active participant in a congregation that is affiliated with Mennonite World Conference; preference is given to those who are affiliated with Mennonite Church USA or Mennonite Church Canada.
- Note: Some partial-tuition scholarships may be awarded.
Criteria for award recipients
- Recipients must be permanent residents of the U.S. or Canada and be active participants in a congregation that is affiliated with Mennonite World Conference; preference is given to those who are affiliated with Mennonite Church USA or Mennonite Church Canada.
- The decision to award a grant will be based on four factors:
- Previous academic performance, including a minimum GPA of 3.00 from all undergraduate work, based on information gained from transcripts and references
- Leadership potential and demonstrated skills, based on information gained from references
- Theological discernment, based on an essay written by the applicant on the subject of “The Church” (1,200 to 1,800 words)
- Personal character, based on information gained from references
Procedures
Applicants must submit the following for the coming academic year:
- A completed Admissions Application with all supporting materials, including transcript(s) and references
- Completed Financial Aid and Scholarship applications
- A 1,200-1,800-word essay on the subject of “The Church”
AMBS will select the recipient(s) of this award and inform the student(s) via e-mail. The recipients must accept their award in writing to confirm enrollment for Semester One.
Understandings
- Recipients will be enrolled as full-time or part-time students on campus. (Full-time is defined as taking nine or more credit hours per semester plus one Summer Term course. Part-time is defined as taking fewer than nine credit hours or more per semester.)
- Full-time students will receive a grant of up to 100 percent of tuition for up to four years for a Master of Divinity and up to three years for a Master of Arts (provided they meet certain conditions each year).
Part-time students will receive a grant of up to 75 percent of tuition for up to six years for a Master of Divinity and up to five years for a Master of Arts (provided they meet certain conditions each year). - Eligibility from year to year will be based on satisfactory progress toward completion of the degree, including:
- Maintaining a minimum 3.00 GPA
- Supporting and adhering to AMBS community life standards
- Supporting and participating in enrollment and recruitment activities and initiatives, as requested by the AMBS Admissions Team
- Actively participating in campus activities
- Assuming leadership responsibilities on the AMBS campus
- Recipients will not be eligible to receive other AMBS scholarships.
- Scholarships and financial aid given by AMBS will not exceed 100 percent of tuition.
