Remembering Bishop Thuma Hamukang’andu

Bishop Thuma Hamukang’andu of Choma, Zambia, a student in AMBS’s Graduate Certificate in Theological Studies program, passed away on July 26, 2026. He was a bishop with Brethren in Christ Church (Zambia Conference) — a member church of Mennonite World Conference (MWC) — and also served as Africa Representative on MWC’s Executive Committee (2009–22). He was taking online courses through AMBS from Zambia.
The AMBS community will remember Bishop Thuma for his faithful service to the church, his leadership in building up the body of Christ, and his deep commitment to the global Anabaptist communion.
“Since joining our seminary learning community, Bishop Thuma enriched the lives of his fellow students and our faculty,” reflected David Boshart, PhD, President. “He brought wisdom, gracious humility and pastoral insight. He faithfully represented the vision, vibrancy and resilient faith of the Brethren in Christ Church of Zambia, broadening our perspectives and helping AMBS to embody a global Anabaptist theology and ministry.
“We extend our deepest condolences to Bishop Thuma’s family, his local congregation, the bishops and pastors of the Brethren in Christ Church of Zambia, and all who loved and served alongside him.”
A funeral was held July 29, 2026, at Macha Mission Church in Zambia.
