The Problem of Social Responsibility from the Perspective of the Mennonite Church
J. Lawrence Burkholder
This work by Mennonite theologian-ethicist Burkholder was motivated by his own experience as a relief worker and United Nations administrator in China during the post-World War II years. Being confronted with the need to exercise public power, he was led to reassess and critique the traditional Mennonite approach to social ethics. From the introduction to this book, Burkholder says: "What impressed me most was the ambiguity of power. ... Eventually I came to see life dialectically according to which multiple demands required one to choose between equally valid but contradictory obligations." It is this dilemma, set over against the context of mid-century Mennonite ideas and ethos, with which he grapples. Published by IMS.
