The AMBS Library Catalog (PALNI)
- Format of scripture text subject
headings
- In order to locate books in the AMBS Library on a specific scripture
text, you first need to know the
format
of scripture text subject headings in the library catalog. Notice that chapter
numbers are Roman numerals.
- Bible. O.T. Genesis
Bible. O.T. Kings, 1st, III, 1-15
(1st Kings 3:1-15) Bible. N.T. Mark II, 1 - III, 6 (Mark 2:1-3:6)
-
- Procedure:
- In the "Browse an alphabetical list
of headings" box, select "Subject heading
(beginning with)". Type in the subject heading with the book name only. Do not attempt
to enter chapter numbers and verses. Capitals are not necessary. Enter the
periods using the following format:
- bible. o.t. genesis
bible. o.t. kings 1st
bible. n.t. mark
bible. n.t. epistles of john
The result is a list of subject headings and subheadings. See the example below. - Page through the lists using [Previous Page] and [Next
Page]. This takes time but is the most effective way to find entries.
Select the underlined titles to view the records that relate to that particular subject
heading.
- Remember:
- Roman numerals are used for chapter numbers.
- In the results list, Roman numerals are alphabetized as letter I
(number 1), the letter X (number 10) and the letter V (number 5).
Chapter numbers are Arabic numbers (1,2,3...) - Note that the computer orders by initial numeral so
Mark I, 11 comes before Mark I, 2. Roman numerals are
alphabetized
by
letter so Mark IX comes before Mark V.
- 1st, 2nd, 3rd are used for multiple books of the
Bible (bible. o.t. kings 1st).
